Volunteer with the Elfuns

Many of our volunteers are retired GE technical and managerial leaders. Others have retired from positions throughout the Capital District of New York. Most volunteers have been with the Elfuns for many years, and we are always looking for new members to join our ranks. This is a brief summary of life at the Elfuns.

Morning begins in our common area for coffee and dessert, as we chat about life, technologies, and a variety of other topics. Activities revolve around donations destined to our charities and donations entering our facility. Our group allows volunteers to problem solve with a purpose.

We have a variety of volunteer positions available, including:

  • Insuring customer data has been securely removed from all devices.
  • Repairing computers, printers and equipment.
  • Rehabilitating late model computers (desktops/laptops/tablets), printers and peripherals to be donated to charities.
  • Preparing equipment donations to charities.
  • Receiving equipment donations from the public.
  • Disassembling old equipment into recycling categories. Motherboards, processors, memory and metals are collected and sold to responsible vendors for recycling. The work these volunteers perform fund our computer rehabilitation donation program.
  • Managing our social media programs.
  • Managing our inventory.

We are always interested in expanding our group’s capabilities.

Consider The Following And Consider Joining

1. Sense of Purpose

Our volunteers have a sense of purpose. We work together to provide a valuable service to non-profits and schools. By enabling equipment reuse, rather than recycling, we prevent waste and help to green our world. Our teamwork and camaraderie is an additional reward as we work toward our common goals.

2. Skills

Problem solving allows us to reuse skills learned throughout life and develop new skills. Whether hands-on trouble shooting or preparing new equipment, every day is different. Contact us to learn how you can help.

3. Community

Volunteering brings us together, but our common goal unites us and creates a community. Our diverse backgrounds allow us to share strengths and learn from each other.

4. Health

Volunteer activities keep people moving and thinking at the same time. Research has found that volunteering among adults who are 60 and older provided benefits to physical and mental health. Volunteers report better physical health than non-volunteers. Volunteering leads to lower rates of depression and anxiety, especially for people 65 and older.

It reduces stress and increases positive, relaxed feelings by releasing dopamine in the brain. By spending time in service to others, volunteers report feeling a sense of meaning and appreciation, both given and received, which can have a stress-reducing effect.

Reduced stress further decreases the risk of some physical and mental health problems, including heart disease, stroke, depression, anxiety and general illness. In addition, people who volunteer have lower mortality rates than those who do not, even when controlling for age, sex and physical health. (mayoclinic.org)

5. Give back to the community

Make the world a better place by helping non-profits and schools achieve their dreams.
